Strawbery Banke like houses built in the colonial architectural style, were prevalent in North America during the 17th and 18th centuries.
In this painting the houses are characterized by symmetry, use of brick or wood, and features like pitched roofs, dormers, and central chimneys. One gets the sense of the neighborhood with the layered roofs. The chimneys are painted with a high key pink and red so that the eye follows a pattern in the painting. Th roof tops have a chunky texture to give the art some presence.
On the bottom corner are two 18 century women sharing a rare orange. It was a treat to have an orange in New England, they were exotic.
