SOLD The Fantastic Courage of Seafaring Women
30x40x3 Acrylic
This piece is about daughters who go to sea. Ellen Gerrish, was a mother and had her daughter on her husbands tall ship. Helen, was only two. During terrible storms the, females would strap themselves to the masts of the ship down below. There is very little about the story of women at sea. The often helped navigate the ship with calculations ect. What little we do know is quite fantastical. There was the Civil War going on too, which they were involved in one of the voyages.
This was at the #3S Artspace show in 2020 in Portsmouth.
These paintings have a dream like quality about them. I want the viewer to visit their subconscious upon viewing. The talented Turner, ship painter from England was a huge influence for me. The emotions of the sea and what the people of the ship might have felt are a key component in this piece.
