Ellen and Helen Gerrish were the wife and daughter of sea captain Edwin Gerrish. They went to sea to witness unimaginable danger. They were recorded in the historic record because of their involvement in a famous Civil War sea battle. The battle they think they were involved in was the Kearsarge and the Confederate Ship Alabama.

We often don’t think of sea battles during the Civil War. They existed and so did women on ships. Some of the captains took their families on board with them.
